DUTIES AND TAXES IN ALGERIA
Import Duties and Taxes
Algeria imposes duties ranging from 0% to 60% on imported goods, depending on the type of product. Common duty rates are duty-free, 5%, 15%, 30%, and 60%. Certain products (e.g., medical supplies, weapons, books/magazines) require specific licenses/permits and may face higher duties.
In January 2019, Algeria implemented a temporary additional safeguard duty (DAPS) system for 1,095 products. DAPS tariff rates range from 30% to 200%.
Value Added Tax (VAT)
Algeria’s standard VAT rate is 19%.
Various basic items listed in the law are subject to a reduced VAT rate of 9%.
Other Taxes
The import of services is subject to a 4% tax (bank account opening tax), which is reduced to 0.5% for goods/merchants with a minimum value of 20,000 dinars.
Excise taxes apply to tobacco products (5-15%), e-cigarettes (40%), matches and lighters (20%).
